Brad nails are a fine 18-gauge wire, while finish nails offer a heavier 16- or 15-gauge wire (more structural). See the fastener chart (web site or catalog) for the actual size illustrations of both brads and finish nails.
The “first tool” choice of most customers is some kind of brad nailer to attach finish moldings. Heavier finish nails may split smaller moldings, so brads are preferred. The brad nail also has a smaller head, which may not need to be concealed with carpenter’s putty.
Finish nailers are needed for the larger crown and base moldings which require the heavier nail for proper installation.
Most finish carpenters have both a brad nailer for small moldings, and a finish nailer for larger base or crown moldings.

A brad has a wide, but flat shaped head, and is normally shot through a staple gut. A finish nail is hand driven and has a small round head with a counter sink point in the middle of the head.:D

I think that a finish nail is longer and thicker and is use in heavier load conditions. Where as a brad nail is thinner and usually less then 1 1/4'' in length and is used in lighter load conditions such as cabinets, and some furniture.

There is no head on a finish nail. The entire nail goes into the wood, leaving no bump.

A finish nail is usually painted on the head to match your paint job so it blends in.
A brad nail is really small, but you can still it.

a brad nail is a thin, short nail with a very small flat head on it.
A finish nail is also thin, of varying lengths and has a knobby head on it that will countersink (like, into baseboards and the like).
