and tries to drag us to the side of the pool. Our grand children will be visiting this summer and we can't have this, but she loves to swim and be with the family, any suggestions about how to eliminate this problem

You need to establish that the pool belongs to YOU, not to your dog. Some good training helps with that. If your dog jumps into the pool and does this when you're in it, quickly remove her and put her somewhere away from the pool so she can't get to it. Do not allow her into the pool at all unless you say it's ok first. It takes some time and repetition, but she'll get it eventually. Start by being near the pool with her. You start to step in. If she moves to jump into the pool with you, stop her immediately! Stand in her path, grab her collar and pull her away. Do this over and over again, as many times as it takes to have her not go into the pool without you inviting her in first.
I did this same training technique with my dog when it came to going out onto my balcony. She used to charge outside ahead of me onto the balcony, even when I didn't want her out there. After about 3-4 times of me standing in her way and not letting her out until I said it was ok, she got the point. Now, if I go out there, she sits in front of the doorway and waits for my ok to come out. I can leave the sliding door wide open but she doesn't some out onto the balcony until I look at her and say "come".
Just remember ... be patient and be consistent!
Good luck!

Wow, that's a heroic lab for you. Best dogs ever, I tell ya! I think you should just separate her from the situation. She doesn't swim when you're in the pool?

Do not eliminate it. Your dog may save a family member or visitors life one day. Do not discourage good behavior. Keep the dog out of the pool while your grandkids are visiting.

What a wonderful companion. Labs are water dogs. Someday she may actually save someone. Maybe even a grandchild!

Gee, I hope you get a good answer to this. I think she is not misbehaving at all, but doing what comes naturally and trying to help. To punish her for it would be a shame. I figure you feel the same way, I just had to say it for myself. Good luck!

She is trying to rescue you. She will probably not change. You should keep her in another area maybe while the grandkids are there. She is a good hearted dog, knows that you are not natural in the water.

my lab did that too. i ended up getting a tennis ball to toss and keep her distracted in the pool. they float and labs love to retrieve, even in the water.

that's so funny! she's just worried - she's saving you!! try involving her in pool games. start out of the water - throw a ball in for her to get then start doing it from in the water. good luck!

Either she loves being with you or she thinks you're a crappy swimmer and thinks you're drowning. Therefore tries to save you.
