I injured my back when I was in the Army. I use a couple things for pain. I have vicodin but I use it only when really hurting. Otherwise I use a combination of two drugs that together work like a vicodin. I got this from my dentist. You take two aspirin which is 1000mg and three 200mg of motrin or ibuprofen. Take that together every six hours. It works really good, doesn't get rid of everything completely but it helps a lot.
As for the spasms, I have them too and what works the best if going to see a physical therapist and having them do the ultra sound on my back. First they lay you on real hot pads for fifteen minutes then they flip you over and use gel to run the ultra sound across your back. This hits the spots that are tightened or spasming.
Another treatment is that I have a traction device where I hook it up in a door way and it pulls my new, stretches it, balanced with a bag of sand. It helps my back realign and it's easy to do and you can get it from any pharmacy.

Chiropractor and Massage Therapist as soon as you can. The principles below still work.
Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches).
Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles).
Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago.
Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain.
The cure - start with a professional massage, you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles).
For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from.

Well it depends on how long the pain's been going on for. If he started getting the pain after doing something physical then it could be a slipped disk or a pulled muscle which is sounds like. Give him some ibuprofen and if you can get a back rub or something for muscle pain. If that doesn't help go to the doctors.

I would have your father follow-up with his family physician. They will perform some testing to determine if the pain is being caused by a disease process. If they rule that out they may refer you to a physical therapist and/or an orthopedic surgeon. I would as your doctor for a referral to a physical therapist. There are many treatments that a PT can perform to help decrease his symptoms and restore his function.

ER refuses no one and will see you for this until you can see a regular doctor.
An ER will diagnose and prescribe as needed.
