LAPD:http://www.joinlapd.com/qualifications.html
NYPD: http://www.nypd2.org/html/recruit/requirements.html

LAPD is content with high school. NYPD prefers an AA degree. NYPD will substitute military service for the AA.

The national guard is probably a bad route as you'll be deployed to Iraq the nanosecond you finish basic.

Below I listed threee links, the first is for L.A. County Sheriff

the 2nd is the Human Resources Department for Los Angeles County .. if you click on Jobs it will tell you what is available for the 38 Departments of Los Angeles County.

the 3rd link is the salary listing those are monthly pay -- page 16 may be of interest to you.

I have extensive knowledge of L.A. County Probation, you may want to look at that too, it's more extensive than you think. Good Luck.

First off I was to what a commendable endevor you are taking on. i wish you the best of luck. Once you've finished the NG and when you get your degree you will be at a different salary level then one who has no training and go straight to the academy. No one can truly pinpoint your earnings as I will assume 4-6 yrs will be spent to cultivate your education. Your most important interveiw in with IA ( internal affairs) and they want honesty right down to if you stole gum in kindergarten, don't leave any mistakes you may have made growing up out of your interview, they tend to look at that as what else are you hiding. finish school, go to academy and be the best you can, hope this helps!

I know the service records through hiring the ex- los angeles
legal team members. This is a great city for law modeling. A
new piece of information is critical, one must now try to apply
the reasonable part of law when happening to be young, strong,
and influencing other people. Because model behaviors are not
so complicated you should study fareness, truth, and integrity
as this generations best attributes. Today corruption, filth, and
bias are the active problem that is daily work for modeling.

Would probably help to work on your fitness to get a head start on everyone else when it comes to the physical trials part of joining + also do your best to avoid doing anything liable to cause you to drop yourself right in it with the law, other than that you've pretty much answered it yourself apart from the salary.

Oh yeah......... and it would probably help to start learning the streets there like the back of your hand (even the youngest reader of the "Usborne Detectives' Handbook" knows that)....... there's some great maps + detailed aerial photographs in GOOGLE EARTH from http://earth.google.com
