Well, since you ask, I shall say that NO ! It should not be. If it were, then all those fascists that are bitching about english being this and being that would be much, much worse.
To those wise people that insist in saying that two languages leads to separation, division, etc, of the country, like they say it is happening in some places, in Russia the czars first and later the comunists made all of the different peoples that lived within the country learn Russian precisely for that reason. Even when Poland was part of the Russian empire they forbid the use of polish and made Russian mandatory.
No good. Poland became independent after WW I in spite of spending almost 150 years as part of the Russian empire , and you know what happened after the perestroika

It would be ironic at the very least that the US that is constantly criticized for destroying the English language would make it the official language. Languages evolve. How would we decide which is the standard English. Ours? Great Britian's? Ireland's? Australia's? South Africa's? India's? Shakespear's? King James'?
English is already the country's defacto language because the majority of the population speaks it. If the majority became spanish speaking, it should change to spanish. That's the way a democrasy works. As the population of Spanish speakers grow, it is only appropriate that more things are written in Spanish.

*I'm from Montana which is Spanish for mountain and even on our flag it is written "oro y plata" (gold and silver). Would we have to change our name and flag? What about Colorado or San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas?

Yes, I think so. Many countries have a first language and they still teach two languages in the classroom. If English were the first language, we could still teach Spanish. It doesn't mean English is better; it just serves as the primary language for public notices, road signs, etc. Some people say that Esperanto (one common language that everyone, ideally, would be able to speak) is a good solution to this, but personally, I don't think it's possible.

it is funny i saw your question. im currently reading a lot about language policy, and the conflicts on this background are very common. in the case of US i would say you will need a very good thought through language planning. i could think about English as about lingua franca (common language) for the different nationalities , which populate usa. but giving a special status to spanish and some other languages or language variations is also very important - from the point of view of education, socialization of economically and socially deprived ethnic groups, international cooperation, etc. the trick is in the moment when you start to show respect to the languages of minorities, you will motivate them to learn the dominant language. that is what i believe in.
you can google "language policy" and see how much there is on this topic, especially on US issues.

Yes, it should. First of all our signs are in English. We've spoken it mostly since we were colonies. All the other groups who have come here have learned English. There's nothing wrong with a few bilingual signs, but it's not fair to the people who are already here to have to deal with a language other than the one they know, unless they choose to. Nobody is forcing the immigrants to come here. I don't have a problem with immigrants coming here, but they all need to learn English just like everybody else did.

Maybe you have another language you think it should be?
Perhaps Latin or Greek or German or Aramaic?
Lets stick with English, be it official or not.

Government's taken 231 years and still has not reach an opinion
or sees need to do so. BS.

Did you know that our founding fathers had a meeting to discuss this exact topic- only the choice was between GREEK and English?? They chose English and that's why our country speaks it today... interesting.
