Ask your vet. Animals can have bad reactions to the strangest things - I mean chocolate can kill a dog, aspirin a cat - so you want to check with an expert before you put any substance on poochie. You may also check at a pet store - they sell costumes for pets, especially at halloween, so may have had such a question before. Also, try calling a dog groomer. I know they do all kinds of stuff to dogs hair.

I'm not sure that it's animal abuse but it is weird.. why would you want to do that?
I remember being in middle school and kids dying their hair with kool-aide. I don't think that would be harmful to a dog if he licked it. Food coloring??
But still.. why oh why would you want to do it? A purple dog is gonna look pretty silly and probably will get laughed at.

I think it would depend upon what color your dog is... if it's a dark colored dog, then there probably isn't a safe way... dog hair being course, it could resist bleaching and put blisters on the dog, or it could cause skin problems. If the dog is a pale color, then I would think a color wash (one without peroxide) would be okay. Or maybe a henna. I would suggest asking your vet so there aren't any horrible consequences... People dye their hair, so, I don't see it as abusive, but just be careful. Also, I would really suggest giving your dog peanut butter to keep the skin nice afterwords (as long as the dog isn't allergic to peanuts). Just a tablespoon a day keeps my dog nice and shiny.

I don't see why this would be a problem unless you can't keep the dog from licking the hair coloring before rinsing it off. Just follow the directions. You might try one of those "Elizabethan collars" that they put on dogs if they injure a leg, to keep from being able to chew the bandaging off. If you have a friend with a dog or cats near the same size, ask them. Those things are expensive ($35 or so), I have one from a dog and from a cat, so I never have to buy one again if anybody gets hurt. I bet you could even make one but you'd have to get pretty creative.

Once when I was little we had a little white bichon frise and my sister and I put red play-doh in water and were playing with it. anyway, we petted the dog with the water stilll on our hands and it made him PINK! So we did it more. Needless to say, my parents weren't too pleased. :)
okay to answer your question you can takl to your vet and ask him. There used to be a dog groomer's where I live that specialized in dying dog's hair. You can use food-coloring and water. Massage it in. I've read about other people doing that and it wokred fine for them.

I know you dont want any negative comments but please if you do do this too your dog it would be best done by a groomer and please dont use human dye products on your dog it is very harmful for his skin etc. the best thing would be to find a groomer who dyes dogs hair , but there is kool-aid that can be put in there hair and is non-toxic also food coloring. i did actually find a website that sells pet safe hair dyes you might try.. hope this helps you~~

Don't use human hair color on them!
You can use food coloring in a spray bottle with some water...
It's non toxic and will eventually rinse out.
Have fun! I don't think it's abuse at all. Dogs are supposed to be fun, and changing her hair color should be just that.

Last year at my employers annual pet carnival. ) We do a major adoption thing there with all the rescue groups.) I took a white standard pooble and used the colored hair spray that you can get at a beauty supply place. i made eack of her legs a different color. Then I made a template out of cardboard of a circle and sprayed her with different colored polka dots all over her body. i banded her tail in dfferent colors. and each ear was a different color.
as long as she didn't get wet, the color was fine. it washed out completely, and didn't hurt her a bit.
there are dyes, and the kool aid trick. but those won't wash out. you just have to let it grow out and then shave it off
