Hi, I am moving to LA soon for a job and will need to find an apartment. I've visited the area and liked Santa Monica but I've been warned about the traffic. The commute will be 7-8 miles directly up Wilshire. How long is that going to take if I have to be at work at 9 or 10am? Is it worth it vs living closer in Westwood (3-4 miles)? Is there anywhere else that might be better, keeping in mind the daily commute to Beverly Hills? I was hoping to find a 1br, at least 800sq ft for $1600-$1900. I will be living by myself and am in my late 20's. I'd like something near bars or other places to hang out on weekends. Walking distance would be a plus. The beach would be nice but if the commute is too long (over 30 minutes), it's not worth it to me. Yes I realize that may be picky for LA, but I'm used to a short commute :)

the commute isn't that bad. Depending on where you live in Santa Monica, you might be able to take the 10 freeway. If you have to be at work at 10am, then don't worry at all...it should only really take you about 20 or 30 min.

another area to consider living is the Beverly Hills adjacent area...Third street and Fairfax or Beverly/Fairfax. or Miracle Mile. You'll find a 1bedroom in your price range easier enough. There's lots of bars, restaurants. The Grove is nearby too..movies. shopping etc. and you'll be barely 10 or 15 minutes away from bev. hills.

Living by the beach is overrated. It's crowded and on the weekends your neighborhood gets overrun...so, you get crappy traffic on sunday morning.

the commute isn't too bad but try to avoid Wilshire and Santa Monica Blvd -Olympic and Pico are a bit faster
(most because they don't have on or off ramps to the San Diego (405 freeway) which backs up traffic

you could also try transit the Metro has
their rapid line 720 making stops in West LA at
Bundy. Barrington., VA (sawtell/Bonsall), Westwood, Beverly Glen,Santa Monica, Beverly, and Robertson

There will always be a bad spot in and around l.a. Hollywood is the least safest of the three. Santa monica is nice but has a lot of homeless. Beverly hills is the safest and most expensive. West hollywood is cheaper, safer, and has a big gay community if you don't mind.

Well stay at the Roosevelt Hotel (or some place) for a week or so once you get there to get a feel for Santa Monica, Westwood and West Holly (which is the are described by several people above...Regardless of your choice. you are lucky...that's no commute at all for L.A.

Hollywood isn't a city. It is part of Los Angeles.
