Microsoft does not give away software, so your best bet is to look at old computers that people are giving away and make sure that they have the restore/install discs. If you are willing to spend a dollar or two, some bargains can be found at yard sales or local swap meets. Make sure you get the product code that came with the CD. Of course, sealed CD sets are best.

Either way, remember that you are getting a license for one copy of the software, and that means that you can't install it on more than one computer at any one time.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD COPIES OF SOFTWARE FROM FILE SHARING SERVICES! This is highly illegal and can land you with a $10,000 fine and jail time.

Yes, do get UBUNTU. It's free, reliable and up to date. If your computer has 256MB of RAM get a full version. If less, get XUBUNTU.

Once you install one of these operating systems you will have access to thousands of free programs (including the award winning office suite OpenOffice)

Rather than doing that you might consider downloading and installing a free Linux distribution like Ubuntu. It is not complicated to use.

Microsoft Products are not free unless you are in one of their programs that gives you free copies of their software. But that's not really free is it?
