Does anyone have any explanations or resources to help me to get a deeper understanding of modernism and surrealism in photography? I have to do a project and also need ideas of what to take photos of. Anything would be appreciated.

There are many good books on studying photography now, and depending on where you are there may be galleries nearby who can suggest both resources and their work may give you ideas of what you can take pictures of. Two books which I have somewhere both cover these kind of topics, and are called something like: "Photography: A cultural history" and "The History of Photography". There's also a book called "L'Amour Fou: Photography and Surrealism", which you should probably check out.

Depending on what your project brief is, galleries and simple observation should help you decide what might be interesting and try to develop some themes - as that tends to be more popular than a series of shots that don't seem to have any connection to each other.

Do an image search for Man Ray. He is the premiere surrealist photog.
