I think is within his healthy age range. So I wouldnt worry my daughter is four and is slightly heavier than that but she is also fairly tall.
I just checked my baby book and your sons weight is perfectly in the middle of the healthy wight range for boys, how tall is he?
So I dont think there is any need to worry. In regards to eating of junk food. Just ask your inlaws to keep junk as a special treat as it is affecting his health and will undoubtedly ruin his teeth. They should respect that and if they dont then tell them they wont be able to see him till they can act as responsible adults in regards to your childs eating habits. I've had to have this talk with my family and inlaws. They honestly think they are being nice and dont realise that they are having any ill effect.
If you are so worried about his weight (I really dont think you need to be) then go see your Dr and get his height and weight checked.

My healthy 12 year old weighs 75 lbs.
He's a picky eater, but he takes a vitamin most days with some protein.
Try to get your son to eat an egg (an egg is pure protein)3 times a week and give him his vitamin then. Mix scrambled egg with mashed potatoes if you are desperate. The goal is to get the egg in, so any sneaky way is acceptable. Vitamins work best when eaten along with protein.
Milk is also pure protein (and calcium, etc.). So if your son drinks 2-3 cups of milk a day, that's a lot of protein and might be close to the amount of protein he needs to have that day.

actually that is pretty average. my little guy is 3 yrs and 8 months and is only 31 pounds. he is very active and so he burns a lot of calories. perhaps you little one is the same. My daughter now 14 when she was 5.5 she was in a size 2T and weighed 37 lbs. she was very small but then she hit a growth spurt and gained weight and height. yours will do the same. Don't worry about the size just make sure he is healthy and nothing medically wrong with him. He'll get bigger in time!!

If the doctor says he's healthy, then don't worry. Kids that age are often more interested in playing than eating. My sister's twins are 6 now and my nephew weighs 42 lbs and my neice just hit 40 lbs. Their doctor says they are perfectly healthy and probably genetically predisposed to be petite b/c both parents are short & were slim as children.

My 6 yr. old nephew weighs 41 pounds. He eats soooooo much junk and wants to play rather than eat. I think it's mostly his parents' fault as they feed him so late in the evening and by that time he just wants to go to bed. They also feed him in front of the the television.
What does your doc say? As long as you give him a good variety of foods (not what your inlaws give him) such as veggies, fruits, grains, etc. Then he should be fine. How's his dairy consumption? You may want to increase the milk for his bones.

Sounds pretty normal to me too. My three year old weighs about that much. My 5 year old wieghs abouyt 39 lbs. Both are healthy kids. Every child grow and develope diffrently. So if you doctor don't send up any red flags, there is no need to send out the horsemen.

My nephew is extremely skinny. He's 4 now. When he was 3 he weighed 28 pounds. He eats enough too just doesn't gain weight. But doctors aren't worried he's fine.

My soon to be 4 year old weighs 36 # but I am not worried. She/he will catch up. Try to push the healthier foods. It isn't quantity as much as it is quality. Tell your inlaws to consider this. Although what are grandparents for!!
