Honesty, integrity, loyalty and compassion for everyone, not singling out anyone. Unfortunately, it is very hard to find, but there are still people around that are good and possess these qualities.

first off, this is a totally subjective question. What are the characteristics of a great person in YOUR mind? Everyone on earth could weigh in on the characteristics of a great person and you would find a different list for each one. You could list all the famous historical figures, good or evil, and you'd find opposing viewpoints for both categories. The only objective viewpoint would have to be based on whether your categories are based on logical means and thats assuming you are a logical being which most people arent.

I get the sneaking suspicion that perhaps we're helping a student write a paper...but maybe I'm just miffed that the internet did not exist when I was in college. (Ahem! Not that I would have used it to short-cut my studies!)
All the same, this is Yahoo! Answers, and it's still a free country, so...my top five off the top of my head are:
* Hard work; more importnatly a work ethic that is "healthy" in the sense that it does not singularly revolve around wealth and monetary gain.
* Honest, true kindness that doesn't necessarily involve personal gain: kindness for kindness' sake.
* Respect for all forms of life.
* Tenacity and committed application.
* Forgiveness without bitterness. (Still working on that one, myself)

braveness. Compassion. Honesty. Integrity. Humility. An openess to the persepctives, ideals, and perspectives of others. Being nonjudgemental and prepared to advance and learn. A comprehension that existence is a challange to constanctly strengthen ourselves to grow to be the suited variations of ourselves, in the time of our lives.

You can learn both what these traits are and what are red flags for deeper, semi-hidden bad traits.
There is a book by Henry Cloud & John Townsend ( might have the first names swiched) called "Boundaries".
Read it, and soon you will be answering this question for yourself as well as helping your friends with these issues-we all face them.
Best wishes:)

In my opinion I think to be great, you have to learn to be humble, unselfish, honest, giving, and loving.
There are alot of ideas of what greatness could be. People climb over one another for wealth, power, respect and authority. But I don't believe those people to be great. I believe they hurt people to get to where they are and there is no pride in that. And I have no respect for that kind of person.
