Will there come a point in the future where large scale loss of life has occurred and the antisocial and subversive nature of denial of global warming caused by mankind has to be confronted by law. After all holocaust denial is a criminal offence in Germany and Austria.

OK my question was a little 'tongue in cheek' and born of exasperation at the prevalence of self serving junk science on this subject. But who knows? If real science reduces the already small degree of uncertainty further and lives are at risk it does become a moral issue of the greatest importance.

Well I must admit I'm drawn to the concept. Freedom of speech is all well and good but if you hold certain views that society finds unacceptable (and therefore legislates against) then society does have a right to punish you - Global Jehad and the spreading of a terrorist ideology, racism and the BNP, sexism, ageism etc.

I think that the consequences of continuing to act as if man made global warming was a myth and promoting this ideology are dangerous, if not for us then certainly for future generations. And as I, like many, have children I would wish to protect their interests and all of those who follow me (quite appart for our society as a whole which I also think should be protected from destablising influences - facism, neo-conism (same thing?) etc).

So I think that this is one of those significant issues where we need to make sure that the proper message and understanding regarding these issues are promoted and making denial of such a criminal offense seems a good idea (especially as those that claim the global warming is a myth tend to be Global Jehadist, racist, sexist, ageist, anti-intellectual, neo-cons).

Great question!

Probably not.

As global warming is (by definition) a worldwide issue, each country/population will be able to blame another. This will avoid those inconvenient pangs of social guilt and responsibility. Rather than denying human contribution, I'm sure you will all believe it was those other humans who made the significant contribution.

By comparison (IMHO) the holocaust was geographically discrete with definite responsible parties. (IE we know who did it and where.) Legislation was passed to help ensure it does not re-occur.

Probably about the same time as blindly following the panic mongers becomes a criminal offense.

Even the most rabid global warming people in the IPCC admit that they don't know for a certainty that alleged global warming is caused by humans. It is still an unproven theory. How about waiting until the real science is sure before jumping up and down, running in circles, squawking and flapping your arms? It wasn't all that long ago that THE SAME PEOPLE DECLARING GLOBAL WARMING as a fact were warning of an impending ice age.

Denial of the holocaust is seen as a moral issue, but global warming is only a personal view at this point.

I think it would be freaky to be arrested for opposing a political belief. I call global warming a political belief because it concerns government action and not everyone agrees on it.

Stop! what caused the last ice age ? It wasn't because I put the wrong rubbish in my green top bin last Thursday. The worlds been turning for over 1 billion years the Dinosaurs roamed for 150million plus.We have been here for 3/4 million its been in the last 200 years we have been stinking up the place.I am not saying we should not look after the place we need to,but there is no real proof man is causing climate change. Its called Nature its an ongoing cycle take a soil sample its their to see.

Well apparently whoever tried to sue the EPA i think California and a bunch of others thinks its at least a civil offense at these point.

But honestly people on the EPAs case can go pound sand cause it has never been the EPAs job, nor should it in many people's opinion, to control GHGs.

I really would like to know what caused the end of the last ice age? Was it as a result of the methane produced by animals? Or was it as a result of the Sun being a variable star?

plenty of people deny that holocaust ever happened and i don't think it's a criminal offense to think so. same with the tobacco industry. it might, however, be a criminal offense, at least i hope it does, to withhold information about global warming

Perhaps only in the People's Republic of Cambridge or San Francisco where dense collections of communists and socialists would consider free (and in this case, accurate) speech criminal.
