I was in the army because they had the training I wanted and offered the best choice of duty stations when I enlisted.
Do you know what type of skill set you want? How about where you want to go? That is what you should be looking at. I spent my entire tour of duty in Alaska working on computers and loved it. My brother was in the Navy, learned to be a seaman, a fire marshal and got to go to Australia. He loved it too.
Do you want to be a combat soldier? A mechanic, a radar operator? What you want to do and your personal abilities should be the deciding factor. Look at the branch that best provides for the skill set you are interested in. But, no matter which branch you choose, remember that you are giving your oath to serve. It isn't a game and you can't change your mind in mid stream.

The Marines are great self-promoters, but there's really nothing militarily that Marines do that the Army doesn't do equally well and for longer. (LOL) Marines have spiffy uniforms and a lot of pride. They fight well and on that basis I respect them.
The Army is the biggest and most diverse service, with the quickest promotion rates and widest career choices. It bears the burden of any ground war, and has the longest deployments (12+ months).
The Air Force is a technical service. When the AF does deploy, it only deploys them for 6 months, tops. I suppose if you're looking for the closest thing to still being a civilian, that's the life.
The Navy goes to sea. A lot. It's hard if you have a family. And if you don't like living in a metal closet for 6 months at a time, and 5-minute showers, don't go there.
Basically they all have pros and cons. I'd join the Army again, though. I have more travel options. :-)

Someone said above that:
"The Marines are great self-promoters, but there's really nothing militarily that Marines do that the Army doesn't do equally well and for longer. (LOL) Marines have spiffy uniforms and a lot of pride. They fight well and on that basis I respect them."
As a retired Marine Corps Officer, I object to this "analysis." Let's see what others, not Marines, have said about the Marines:
The Marine Corps has just been called by the New York Times, 'The elite of this country.' I think it is the elite of the world.
Admiral William Halsey, U.S. Navy
I can't say enough about the two Marine divisions. If I use words like 'brilliant,' it would really be an under description of the absolutely superb job that they did in breaching the so-called 'impenetrable barrier.' It was a classic- absolutely classic- military breaching of a very very tough minefield, barbed wire, fire trenches-type barrier.
Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, U. S. Army
Commander, Operation Desert Storm, February 1991
There are only two kinds of people that understand Marines: Marines and the enemy. Everyone else has a second-hand opinion.
Gen. William Thornson, U.S. Army
The American Marines have it [pride], and benefit from it. They are tough, cocky, sure of themselves and their buddies. They can fight and they know it.
General Mark Clark, U.S. Army
"Why in hell can't the Army do it if the Marines can. They are the same kind of men; why can't they be like Marines."
Gen. John J. "Black Jack" Pershing, USA; 12 February 1918
As far as the statement that, "there's really nothing militarily that Marines do that the Army doesn't do equally well and for longer."
The Marine Corps is the only service with an Air-Ground capability to project power from the sea. The Army does have helicopters but it does not have the same fixed wing capabilty that the Marine Corps does. The Marine Corps is the only service capable of purely independent operations in and by itself with its own fixed air wing support. No other service has this organic Air-Ground capability. As far as putting it to use, history speaks for itself.

All branches of the service are good and can teach you a lot of things. The Navy and Air Force has many more jobs that have civilian equivalents. My artillery experience in the Army is pretty much useless to get a civilian job. But an aircraft mechanic is in high demand.

in case you have exceeded your CAT-ASVAB and your actual attempting out yet have not Signed a settlement, you're in all probability not likely to pass by using MEPS returned. it is fantastically not likely and that i've got by no skill heard of it happening to somebody at your point. i prefer to propose the army in basic terms from own flavor. You get to return and forth the international and journey the sea in a manner others in basic terms dream of. The Marines are superb as properly. I certainly tend to lean in the direction of the Maritime ecosystem on account that's extra relaxing than being a Landlubber and sitting around a militia Base. we are able to continuously use extra SEALs too. a super thank you to alter into in good shape than maximum folk interior the international and luxuriate in incredibly a extensive determination interesting rides that makes an enjoyment park curler coaster look as though status in an prolonged monetary corporation line. the two way, thank you For Serving and good good fortune to You!!

I would join the Army or Marines. That is not to denigrate any branch of the service. Those men and women who serve our country are the best of the best. God bless them all.

sure they're the most respected but they're the hardest. I would join the navy or the airforce. The only way I would join the army if I am a obgyn or something like that so i won't have to go to war.
