You'll probably be Ok for Amsterdam as it's in of the EU, however you will need a new passport for SA as you must have 6 months validity left.

you must have a passport that is valid for 6 months after you return from SA if not you may not be allowed out of the airport on your way in. renew it, it takes 3 weeks on normal service and cost £66 pounds at the moment. but you can fastrack it but it will cost you more. dont worry about the interview that someone mentioned cos that only applies to first passports and not renewing existing ones

Although your passport is still valid and can be used for travel, most countries require that your passport be valid for at least 6 months upon your arrival in the country. If it isn't you could be denied entry and asked to leave or be deported. That said, if you are going on a short holiday (2-3weeks) and can show a valid return ticket many will allow you to enter.

As some other folks said many countries require that you have 6 months left and enough pages to be stamped.

In these days of stressful air travel due to terrorism save yourself the aggravation and get a new passport. You are going to need one soon anyway, so just go ahead and do it. It is one less thing to worry about and you will be glad you did

Enjoy your travels.

For most, maybe all, foreign travel you need 6 months remaining on your passport. Therefore, you will need to renew it before you go away at easter.

I would suggest you renew it soon any way before they bring in the new rules with the interview you will have to have for a new passport.

The Amsterdam trip will be ok if you have a valid passport. You will need to the South African embassy as I'm not sure about their rules. Check the FCO website http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagename=OpenMarket/Xcelerate/ShowPage&c=Page&cid=1007029396086 for contact details. If need be, speak to the passport office http://www.passport.gov.uk/index.asp about renewals.

Most non EU countries require that your passport is valid for six months longer than your stay.

when i went to turkey ( not eu ) i needed 6 months left to run. not sure about europe? if u put it in now, they will date it 10 years from when it actually expires, so u don't lose out on those 6 months!!
