She is 5 months old and I expected her to be mean but she will not let me near her at all. I could barely get in the room to give her any food. Does anyone know how long this could last? I do have pain meds for her but the vet told me to start those in the morning. I also have 3 kids that I am trying to keep away from her till she is ok. Just want to get an idea.

She probably is just cranky and a little freaked out by not only the overall situation, but also the pain medication they may have given her. I doubt it is due to being painful. She will probably be fine by later tonight when the drugs wear off.

And I would just like to say that it's best if the vet doesn't keep your cat overnight unless your particular vet's office has overnight staff--I think the cat is safer at home with you after surgery than it is at the hospital by itself in case there is an emergency. I think your vet did the right thing, although perhaps keeping your cat for a few more hours would have helped.

Your poor kitty! Five months old is a bit young. Spaying is usually better held off till minimum six months. And your vet should have kept her overnight for observation, as this was major surgery. I have never heard of a vet who was so irresponsible as to release her the same day as her surgery. There are a couple of organizations you could check with to find out whether the vet was unprofessional or not: The American College of Veterinary Surgeons, and American Veterinary Medical Association.

After you get a new vet, you might have the new vet check her out. Follow-up should also have been reviewed with you by your vet. In fact, when did the vet say he/she was going to remove the stitches? I suggest you find a new vet, someone you can call and talk to the actual veterinarian, tell him or her about your experience, then get his or her advice.

I agree with the responders who say to keep her in a room off-limits to your kids, and just feed her and change her litter box. Then give her the pain meds in the morning.

But then, get a new vet.

She might not get any better. You have to realize that. When mine was spayed, she didn't do anything like that. But each cat handles it differently. Wait until the morning and the pain meds kicked in. She might feel a little better, but if you don't notice a change in her about mid-day, I'd call a vet. There could be something more wrong that you can't see.

Wouldn't you be mean if someone had taken you and got you spayed? She is in pain. Just leave her alone-feed her, change her litter, but leave her in a room all by herself. The vet should have kept her overnight. That was cruel to both you and the cat. If after the pain medicine kicks in (about 2 hours after you give her the medicine) she doesn't act any better, call the vet.

When cats are spayed, they are put under anesthesia. The effects of the gas that is used can linger for several hours after they "wake up". The cat should be kept away from children because you do not want her to tear her stitches being picked up too much, etc. She is in some pain. That also affects an animal's behavior. Once the pain settles, and the effects of the gas go away, she will likely return to her normal self.

Keep her calm and separated from the kids. Everything seems different to her at the moment, especially the smells from the vets, which are on her. Give her about 2 days, she'll come around and be ok.

She will get nicer. What is going on is that she is in pain and doesn't understand why. Give her about a week or two and she will be back to her old self. When I got my cats declawed, one acted like he was going to maul anyone who came near him. In about a week, he was back to his normal sweet self.

She is in pain. Leave her alone. Just feed her and change her litter box. The vet should have kept her overnight.

poor thing is traumatized give her day or two... she return to her old self again.... Remember, cats NEVER change personalities, they just change how much they trust you for the moment.
