I have been on a few holidays and used to get bitten all the time but I have found a way.
1. Mosquito repellent ( the gel ones seem better, as they spread and dry better). And use it everywhere, I have been bitten on my lip, eyelid and tips of fingers before! And please dont forget ankles.
2.Do not wear black, ever! My dad wears a black turban and you could see them wizzing around it! Especially shoes or sandals
3. Ask for mosquito nets and buy a plug in mosquito repellent for your room, if makes a huge difference.
4.Lay off sugary food, everyone I know who has a sweet tooth is tortured by bites.
And thats really it, if you get bitten use tiger balm or vicks, this helps stop the itch. Good luck and enjoy your hoilday.

I was going to say "go somewhere that doesn't have any" then saw mention of the Dominican Republic.
Cover up with long sleeves, cotton socks and trousers in the evenings. Mossies really like ankles!
Take DEET based insect repellant (approx 50% strength should be quite strong enough) and spray or rub onto exposed skin once the sun goes down...but talk to a specialist if you are taking very young children as DEET may not be suitable for them.
Take mosquito coils to burn in your room(s) at night. Citronella candles are fairly effective so could be lit and placed near (or on) your table if sitting out of an evening.

I hate the critters! They get me every time!
I was told by a receptionist at our Doctors, that all the Doctors and the staff there sip a tablespoon on vinegar each morning, it comes out in the sweat and the darn things don't like that.
Apart from the sprays, (they smell horrible don't they?) I have been told not to use hair lacquer, perfume, deodorant even fabric conditioner on clothing, nice smelling soaps, they like a nice smell !
I use all products I can get my hands on, they even do wrist bands now, which I am gonna try this year, but I should think would be good for children especially.
Good luck! Tea tree oil on bites really helps by the way!
