I don't want to sound crass when asking the question, but I am going to be attending a funeral soon and want to give my boss an idea when I'll take off work.

So sorry for your loss. Depends on the faith. I believe Jewish and Muslim are not allowed to be embalmed and therefore, must be buried right away. If it is anyone else (except Hindu - I believe they are cremated) it depends on the family. For our family we had a 3 day viewing with the funeral and burial on the 3rd day which was a Saturday. However, a friend of mine who died on a Wednesday night (also a Catholic) had her viewing on Friday night and was buried the next day. So, ask the family when they wake and funeral will be.

It would be 3 days if it is a close relative.

If you are just going to a funeral you will be gone 3 hours plus driving time.

It is not unreasonable to ask the family involved when they think it will take place explaining that you must arrange for time off at work.

Usually takes about 3 days, but not a hard and fast rule.
