They thought the price for the room was $30, so they each gave $10. The actual price was $25. The girl at the front desk goes to their room to give them the change. To be "fair"...she gives each one of the men $1, and she stays with $2. So...how much does each man spend? $10-$1=$9. So they spend $27 together. The girl keeps $2. $27+2=$29....so what happened to the other dollar?

$30-$5=$25. $25/3=8.33 Each man paid $8.33. $8.33x3=$24.99 $24.99+5($1 to each man & $2 to the girl)=$29.99. I suppose the real question is what heppened to the penny?

How many times do I have to see this riddle on here? When you start to type a question, read all the hits that it brings up. You will see this question has been asked like 5 times in the last week (at least)!
ANSWER: There is no missing dollar, the room originally cost
$30 they should have only paid $25.
They got $3 back and then there's $2 the clerk kept. 3+2=5
Plus the $25 = $30

You have to subtact the $2 to make the room $25. BUT you can't add the $2 to the $27, that doesn't make since. You have to add back on the $3 that she gave back to them to make the $30. Because If they each spent $9 X 3 would be $27 plus the $3 they were returned = $30.

$30 - $5 = $25

3 people; 3 times 1 = 3

$25 + $3 = $28

Woman had 2 dollars

$28 + $2 = $30

Nice teaser! Equations are only so useful!

Once the girl returned the three one-dollar bills, he had only $2 left so there is no missing $1.

Your faulty math came from this:
10 - 1 = 9.00 per salesman. 9 x 3 = 27.00 in total

In reality, the equation should be: ($10*3) -(3*$1) = $27

Girl keeps $2, and budget hotel has remaining $25
