We just got a puppy for free over the weekend and she is only 6 wks. old I took her to the vet and everyone thinks she is part chow and something else. The vet says either part chow and palmeran or part chow and part german shepard. If it is part chow does it tongue have to have part black on it or can it be completly pink. The reason I ask is b/c one person says it has to have some black one it's tongue at least somewhere.

I had a chow/shepard mix growing up. He did have black on his tongue, although I don't think that is the only deciding factor. It's just a tell all. A vet, of all people, would have the best knowledge. A curl in the tail can also be a Chow trait. He was the most loving, baby of a dog I ever had. He was such a sweety. Sometimes people may get the wrong impression of your dog if they know it has chow in him. Chows can be aggressive and have a bad repuation for it. My dog loved everyone and didn't have a mean bone in his body, so don't get hung up on that. It's just one of those sad facts. Take care of your puppy!

If he is half & half as the Vet is guessing, then yes there will be black on the tongue. There are other breeds that are 'similar' to the Chow - can be easily mistaken at such an early age. Wait a few months - by about 6-8 months, it will be easier to tell. Not even a Vet can be totally sure -- they best guess! I have had pups & kittens where I was WITH the moms (and I knew who was the dad) and the Vet sat there and argued with me about the breeds -- stupid idiot!

I hope you have a chow/shepard cross -- mine was the best dog I have ever owned. Extremely loving and became my 4th kid - went everywhere with us.
