G2. The department was run by the very able Colonel Dan Bryan during World War II. Doubtless, the Gardai Siochana (Irish Police) have a Special Branch - both the Irish military and police were very effective against the IRA, bearing in mind the problems that demographic and political imperatives imposed upon their operations (the Irishman will understand!)
(Incidentally, I would be interested to see comments from Irish readers. As a Prod from the'black North' I feel that the Irish forces did well, not only in the IRA bash, but also in Congo, Cyprus and the Lebanon, on UN duties. Ireland is knocked for its security forces, but they seem pretty competent to me. Certailny, Dan Bryans' lads did a very good job against Goertz, Veesenmeyer and the rest in wwII. Maybe they got their influence from Mick Collins, although I am treading dodgy ground here!)

It's the CIE. But it can't be that secret because they used to advertise it on the sides of buses.
