You apply knowledge that is built on the foundation that you learn in Bio and Chem. For instance, you know how different materials you use in dentistry work based on chemical reactions your learned in school. Could I do the work without understanding bio and chem, probably but if there is a problem or things dont work EXACTLY like I was shown, I would not know what to do and every patient is different so you need to understand the basics to adapt to them.

Since a dentist needs to recognize and treat infections of the gums, I would say, learn it, its required. Or are you just looking for an easy job?
