"Say: If all men.... will unanimously determine to challenge the Qur'an, they will not produce its equal, even if they combine their efforts." 17:88

How did mankind refuse to accept the challenge?

Either the Qur'an is truly superior and beyond the reach of any talented individual or group in any generation (and this means that it is a miraculous book), or it is within the reach of the people, but God miraculously prevented mankind from producing a similar discourse. In either case, the prophecy has been fulfilled, and the Qur'an is still standing unequalled.

'Superior' is subjective. And even if it is "superior" to all other similar books, it doesn't mean it's god-inspired. Someone may consider Shakespeare or Dickens to be unequalled, but that doesn't make them god.

When the religion is the state politics and the state's politics is religion the texts often take the place of a constitution. Look at the position of the Constitution in the USA or the Magna Carta in England. This is because the English people put secular rule above religious rule, but these writings are held as being sacred to their counties. If the Catholics had been able to consolidate their power then the bible would rule the western world. In the middle east the only challenge to the religious rule was the Ottoman empire, but they made an alliance with the religious judges instead of getting into a power struggle with them.
There are many writings better in form and content than the Qu'ran but they are not the basis of the legal and constitutional structure. You could not run a court system on the writings of Omar Khayyam.
So is it superior? Yes, I guess, in about the same sense that the Constitution is the superior book in America. What is written in it over rules every other piece of legal writing.

All though the Qur'an may be a beautifully written book, many of us still do NOT believe it is the word of God.

That said, it's only a Muslim opinion that it is superior to any other discourse (Arab or otherwise) which, many of us do not take stock in. It could be superior to other "Arab" writings but that would be the opinion of each individual reader.

Why are Muslims always intent on being or having something more superior than others? It's mind boggling!

Sometimes Muslims remind me of knuckle dragging gray-back gorillas thumping their chests grunting "I'm the Alpha, no you're not, I am"!

I have no idea.
I am still trying to figure out how they think murdering a bunch of innocent victims is somehow a good thing.

I guess with madness governing your reason anything can be considered a good read.

No it's not "unequalled", but it was forced down the throats of the people in those lands where it was professed... by the sword!
