what is the reason for the forward and backward rocking movement displayed by people when they read from the Koran?

Its not only Muslims that rock when they chant. I've seen Sikhs do it at their temple too. I think its a combination of praying and meditating and a way of keeping the flow of the chanting going.
The strange thing is that as I sat there an listened (and I didn't understand a word), I was nearly put to sleep. I could have been boredom but I think it was more the chanting.

Jews do it at the wailing wall. Learning by rote along with the physical movement reinforces and deepens the indoctrination. Rituals at mass etc.
Self perpetuating mental virus IMHO.

Because the arabic form is almost musical and the rocking helps to keep time while the person reads.

Its because they are wearing Indian underware........because of all that rocking it keeps creeping up on them and causing a tremendous wedgie. Wouldn't be polite to reach in and pull it out while reading

I have no idea.
