If you have just been diagnosed, it takes time to find the right medicine that works for you, and you need to be a little patient, because each medicine takes a certain amount of time to take its full effect....some will have side effects that you may not be comfortable with, my husband is bipolar and has tried several different medications, he is currently taking paxil and xanax, so far so good, its only been about 2 months, but its been the best one yet...depakote gave him serious side effects, his liver became enlarged and enzymes were sky high in his blood work...I wish you the best and hope you find the medicine that will give you the relief you need, as quickly as possible...Don't give up, there's is something out there that will help you, its just a matter of time, so be patient and watch for side effects more closely, if there are none, give the medication a little time to take effect and the doctor may just have to adjust your dose. Good Luck and God Bless you.

I understand your frustrations I have been fighting to find the right meds for a long time. But there is hope I recently take Abilify(my happy pill) and Cymbalta. They have both been a life saver. Geodon made me sleep until I was due to take the next dose. Paxil made me so angry I hollered at everyone about everything. Depakote worked so I thought for a little while then I started getting horrible side effects. My best friend takes seroquil and she swears by it. Those are a few things that have helped us the most. Good Luck It is all about being patient and work with your doctor to help you.

As a healthcare provider I can tell you that treating mental illness can be like buying a pair of shoes. Sometimes you have to try on different ones to see what works for you...and sometimes you have to get new meds after you have been on one that previously worked...seems like at times they "wear out". Sometimes, it takes more than one medication to find the answer. I recently went to a seminar which addressed your situation. They recommended adding a low dose of Geodon (40 mg at night ) to an antidepressant (like Prozac, Paxil,Lexapro,Celexa,Zoloft....many to choose from), and a mood stabilizer (like Topamax, Limectal,Depacote,Tegretol...again...to choose from). The important thing in all this is to keep working with your healthcare provider untill you again find an answer to you condition. Keep going...there is an answer...unlike the recent past when we really didn't have the medication to help this condition like we have today.

I take an anti depressant and recently I also started taking Neurontin with it. I am bipolar and the Neurontin along with my effexor has helped tremendously. I researched Neurontin and found out that it is used for bipolar. It really evens out my moods and gives me more energy and motivation. My doc gave me depakote before but I wouldn't take it because of the dangerous side effects. Talk to your doc and try the neurontin. It's worth a shot. Good luck!!
