Golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, Nova Scotia duck tolling retrievers, and flat-coated retrievers would all match this description. They're all big dogs (except for the Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever, they're medium-sized) that are very active, love water, are very trainable, and get along with other pets.

While any one of these breeds would probably fit in really well, the Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever might be the most suitable because they tend to be more loyal to one person, and hence a little more protective (though not aggressive).

There's also the option of checking out your local animal shelter. You can ask the shelter staff to help you find a dog that matches your lifestyle. Of course, make sure the dog gets along with other pets, and has an appropriate coat for winter (it doesn't have to be long, but it shouldn't be really thin like a pit bull coat or a Doberman pinscher coat).

As others have stated, I'd suggest going to your local humane society or animal shelter and telling the staff what you are looking for in a dog. Most of the dogs at shelters are mixed breeds, but I'm sure you can find a dog that is a lab mix or golden mix. Not only are these dogs cheaper than purebred dogs, but you will be doing a great deed by rescuing an unwanted animal and providing a good home for it. Good luck with your search, and don't forget to have your new doggie friend spayed or neutered so that you don't end up with unwanted puppies!

I suggest research. Pick a breed and go gung-ho. There were a lot of good suggestions, check a few out. For once, I agree with the rest: You sound like a Labrador would be ideal. But you need to do your research.

Also, though this has nothing to do with the question, I feel the need to clear something very important up. Hybrid vigor is nothing more than a MYTH, people. It's plain ole' DOG vigor. Purebreds are not healthier than mixes, and vice versa.

In general, mutts tend to be healthier than pure-breds. If I were yu, I would go to the local animal rescue group (they tend to know their animal's personalities better than at a shelter) and tell them the description you wrote here. They should be able to help match you up with a dog of the right personality for you.

Having said that, you would probably do really well with a lab or golden retriever mix.

I think a golden retriever would be best for you- they're medium/large dogs, they're very loyal and affectionate, they're extremely intelligent, and they love to play (since they're retrievers, they like to run and play fetch, etc.). Also, since golden retrievers were bred to retrieve animals in hunting (such as ducks), they usually love the water.

I would defintly say a Boxer. I have a 4 year old Boxer, and he has soo much energy, and always sleeps in the bed with us, even if we kick him off(which is extermly hard to do, by the way) he lets us settle then jumps right back up. They crave attention, and love to be cuddled like big big babies!! And when we are both home and someone is at the door or just pulling up in the driveway, he goes crazy....but dont worry as soon as we open the door he just licks them like crazy ha ha ha, but if he sees that we are in real trouble you can bet he will be right there to defind his owner!!

I would suggst a golden retriever. They are wonderful, loyal dogs. Not too protective, like water and love to romp outside. One would also love to sleep with you. Their coats are perfect for colder weather and they are very trainable.

You sound like a Lab owner, They are very affectionate, loyal and love the outdoors, swimming etc... They come in three colors, Black,Yellow and Chocolate. I find females are better, not so dominating. good luck in your search.
