I only have a small amount of money. If I donate to a charity, I want to give it to ones that are really working in these areas and carry a low overhead.

Totally understand your situation... I feel the same way. I choose one respectable charity in my country and I used to give a little to a few others... I've had to narrow it down because of my own financial situation.
I've always liked WWF (World Wildlife Fund) but you have to decide what feels right for you.

What about PETA? People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. They protect animals.
