If you actually left China, there is no problem. You can apply for, and receive, tourist visas repeatedly as long as you depart between visits. If you are a US citizen, the USD 50 might get to be a problem; you might try for a multiple entry visa (but these are more difficult to get than single entry - usually requiring a letter from a China company).

No problem. Here is all the visa I got in the last 1 year and a half without interruption
- Student visa of one year
- followed by a one month tourist visa without leaving China
- then a trip to Hong-Kong to get a 6 months business visa
- lastly waiting to get my working visa.

If you have left China and are back in your home country, you should be able to apply for a new visa.
You don't state which country you are in, but if you contact a visa company such as Travcour (in London) or Trailfinder's Visa section, they should be able to tell you over the phone.

The China tourist visa is usually valid for three months from date of issue, for length of stay not to exceed 30 days. Applications for a touristic stay exceeding 30 days are not usually granted, except from persons of Chinese origin.
