There are a ton of cameras out on the market. If you are really seriuos you may want to skip point and shoots and get a DSLR. Yes they are more moeny but you truely get what you pay for. I suggest looking at one. I have heard good things about the nikon D-40, but you could also get a digital rebel xt, because their price is getting real cheap. I have a Digital Rebel XTI and truely love the camera.
If you decide to get a point and shoot look for one that has good optical zoom ie 6x and one that has manual control, for this will give you the most functionality. I have a Canon Powershot A700 and it is pretty nice, but now they have the A710 ,a new model with Image stability in it, so your images will be nice and sharp.

In the end it is up to you on how seriuos you want to dive into photography. Getting a DSLR will give you the most flexibilty and teach you alot, but there are many compact point and shoots that pack a punch. Read lots of reviews on the cameras you want to get and make sure you pick one that suites your needs fully.

I'll write in support of Jeffy B on this one. I was going to buy a Canon SD700-IS after writing loads of recommendations for the camera for months and months here, but it was out of stock everywhere. I decided to buy a Canon SD900, because the price suddenly dropped to a more affordable level. I have been extremely happy with the results. It doesn't cost too much more than the SD700-IS, so take your pick. Skip the SD800-IS, but I think $325-350 on either of the others is a very good choice.

Of course, a dSLR would be great, but it would cost about twice as much, so I won't go there...

If we have mis-read your intentions about "on a budget," come back and tell us just how much you would like to spend and we will help you spend it wisely.

Here you go
http://cameras.about.com/od/choosingacamera/tp/under200.htm Good luck. Also go to this site to buy one of the recommendations. It usually has the best deals and it is safe to buy from them.
http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/home.aspx PS-I think the Canon 540 recommended on that first site has been replaced by the Canon 550. More megapixels and still under $200 at Beach camera.

I have a Canon Elph SD700IS, and it is just amazing. I sold my SLR, because this little Canon takes better pictures. It's the best I've ever used.
Good luck.
