Melanin in our skin turns tan to make a protective coating on our skin. A natural sun block, if you will. Our hair lightens because it is being bleached. The sun is stripping the hair of proteins, electrolytes, and pigments.

The sun has bleaching properties. Sunlight acts as a bleach through a process leading to similar results: high energy photons of light, often in the violet or ultraviolet range, can disrupt the bonds in the chromophore, rendering the resulting substance colorless.
Darkening of the skin is caused by an increase or release of the pigment melanin into the skin's cells after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes and protects the body from absorbing an excess of solar radiation, which can be harmful.

the sun darkens our skin because its our skins way of protecting you from getting cancer. Think of this as a human cell - - > (o) in the center, the "o" is the nucleus. When you tan/get sun burnt, the ()'s become thicker; i.e darker;
because if the sun penetrates the () and reaches the "o" then it causes the nucleus to become abnormal, i.e a cancer cell.
it lightens your hair because it dries it out
hope this helped
