About 6 months ago my wife and I got letters saying that on our 2004 taxes we got back more on our refund than we should have. It said that we both got back over $400 a piece. We have never gotten more than $200 a piece before we got married and since we did our taxes this year "married filing jointly", we got just under $300. How do we prove that we never received the amount they said we did?

They can prove what you received, since they have the financial records -- canceled check or ACH history. Ask them for proof of what they claim was paid. They will show it to you happily.

Your 2004 tax return must have been audited so that's why you got the notice. Look at your copies of your 2004 tax returns to see what the refund amount you got back really was. Check the math.

I agree, they will show you the papers. Another thing, check your taxes for those years. You should have kept a copy of them for your records. If not, I would ask them to show you the documents.
