I think that's part of the game, guys check out girls, girls check out guys. As long as you're not yelling out anything disrespectful or perverted at them, I think it's ok.

There is an art to "checking out" the opposite sex.
You take very quick sideways glances. Sometimes you won't need to move your head just your eyes. Your friend won't even know you are doing this.
Never, never stare.
Takes a little practise.
