I know there are good and bad in every group but what percentage of cops do you think are corrupt. I don't just mean take bribes. I mean abuse their authority, bypass people's rights and / or use excessive force?

in my town I'm going to go with 85%, yes I know its high but with you saying abuse of authority thats alot of cops, bypassing peoples rights is also a lot of cops. excessive force isnt' so bad in my town we don't have a lot of violent criminals hadn't had a murder or attempted murder in like 10yrs til last yr.

Maybe 1%. I know you won't agree with this but when you think about it COPs have to go through a lot to get hired. UNLESS they go to Mayberry. But anyway they have to go through a lot of stuff to get on. And then the Police Academy. During this time they learn that over all if they screwed up such as ABUSE their power, Or are CORRUPT they will lose their job/career. And when you think about it, is it worth it? I will say NO. But yes their are some cops that will think they are untouchable. These fall under that 1% And the cops that do abuse their authority are the ones that get the city or town sued. And if there is a problem the department in question will take care of the problem.

At the department I work at, I see very little corruption...abusing authority, bypassing people rights and excessive force are all means of immediate dismissal...and has happened when incidents have happened in the past. After an investigation, if the deputy is found at fault, he/she goes no questions asked...it's in our union contract

A statistic I once saw stated that 20% of all cops were incorruptable, 20% were easily corrupted, while the remaining 80% would prefer to not be corrupt.

With the sate of the present national crime rate as a whole, It has to be frustrating for officers who are dealing with a whole new breed of criminal. I'd have to say at least 25% are tempted to use un-ethical measures to eliminate crime. As far as the percentile who give in to temptation? I refuse to estimate that on the grounds that it may tend to incriminate me. Abuse of authority? Yup, Bypass of rights...yup...excessive force...yup.....But, put yourself in a dangerous job and see what you must do to survive.

100% Corrupt....I'm crooked as heck. I abuse authority to the limit. FREE COFFEE I SAY! And then I say thank you ma'am....... I also PUSH AND FORCE AND PUSH AND FORCE that door open for that young lady..... Okay, Okay, Sometimes at 2 in the morning on the way to a call, after my free coffee (I did just check up on the gas station ya know) I will "bypass" the red light to go to a call....As they say on the mean streets "My Bad".

Its all going to depend on the size of the department, and what attractions the city has and the size of the city, in order to get an accurate percentage.

There are not as many as you thnk. There have been a lot of police officers that abuse their power but with cameras and the media all oer the olace it is very hard to get away with any kind of crime.

You are right!!! there are a few in each group. but the precentage is not that high. you may have a lot in one area but none in another. we are taught now in our academy that if you see it report it. if you don't then you are just as guilty as he is and will serve the same time.
