I'm sending a box, approximately 5 lbs in weight. Can anyone tell me if they know the approximate cost for this?

I think the most I have spent was around $18. The box was full of beef jerky, magazines, 5 lbs of gummy bears etc... Don't forget, do not send any pork products!

There's not really a way to give you an "average" cost for a 5lbs box. Cost depends not just on the box's weight, but also its dimensions and the type of box you're using.

For example, if you can fit 5lbs of goodies into a Priority Mail flat rate box, you will only be charged the "flat rate" for that box. I like to mail items in the $3.95 flat rate Priority boxes (the larger rectangular ones).

If it's just a regular box, like a shoe box or any other kind of plain shipping box, I would check the US Postal Service's website regarding the rate. Go to www.usps.gov and click on "Calculate Postage". Once there, click on "calculate domestic postage" (I explain why later on), and enter your package's information. Use the number after APO AE as the zip code. This should tell you approximately how much it will cost you to ship it.

The reason I said "domestic postage" is that the shipping cost for all items sent to an APO or FPO address is the same as shipping a package within the continental United States, ie. domestic mail. The US postal service only transports the box from where you mail it to a stateside military mail facility. The military takes it the rest of the way. Therefore, there are no international mailing charges.

Send it in a flat rate box. The cost is $8.10 no matter how much the weight is. If it can't all fit, shove as much things as you can into the flat rate and then send the rest in a normal box. I guarantee you it will be cheaper this way.

You should go to the USPO or usps.com and order/pick up a flate rate box. They have all types of sizes. That way, your box is guaranteed about a 2 week delivery or less and the average cost is $8-$13. The military actually recomends USP priority service as their preferred method.
