I think the best German breed is the Schnauzer (all sizes). They are used for policing, hunting, as pets for people with allergies, and great in dog agility competitions. They are truly smart and will outsmart their owners! My Schnauzer plays dirty tricks on me making me think that he will listen to me when in reality he's learning how to challenge me!! Really smart dog!

Personally, out of the German breeds as well as all breeds, I prefer Boxers.
They were originally developed as police and military canines in Germany. Sadly, most officers now prefer German Shepards. Boxers are powerfully built and have an excellent sense of judgement to do the job. They are great additions to K-9 teams.
Even though they are powerfully and sometimes heavily built(especially in Europeon lines - which are probably best to get a dog from for police work), they are graceful. The breed can excell at agility, because it's something most love to do. Watch one running around - their gait and air-time jumps can say it all.
In earlier strains of their breed, they were used for hunting. They have the sense of smell and the powerful body to do the job. My two youngest Boxers have treed multiple animals and done the bay of a coon hound -- without training.
With Boxers, it all comes down to training. If you're creative, patient, and know how to make fun out of a drill, you've got it locked up with them. They're intelligent dogs - but getting them to focus on you is the key. They love doing it for you, but you need to know how to approach it with them. Creativeness - if you have a Boxer, that should be your mantra. They have the drive, the have the ability. So as I said: it comes down to you.
But this breed may not be the breed for you anyway. A bored Boxer is disaster, they need constant mental stimulation, a good physical workout, and someone who will tolerate their zest for life, their mischeviousness, and their wackiness.
If you like all that, look 'em up and do some hard core research. Nothing is worse than a dog - especially a Boxer - paired with a person not suited for them.
And I'd like to say thank you -- for being one of the few who don't just assume 'German Shepard'. Made my day, it really did.

I have seen plenty of German import GSDs! A vet I worked for had a client that raised German & Checoslovakian imports, and sold mostly to the police and military.
German Rottwielers & Boxers are also higher drive & better suited for police & military work.
American bred dogs of these breeds are better suited for agility (Boxers do great at this sport) & family life - less 'on' all the time & easier to deal with (not having to lock them up when company comes or worry when the kids play loudly & run too much about someone getting bitten) .
German Shorthair & Wirehaired Pointers, & Weimaraners from field lines (American or German) make excellent hunting dogs. Conformation dogs of these breeds, again, make better house pets.

For Agility and Policing then the Shepard is the way to go. The German Pinscher is also good for Agility but I don't know about Policing. For hunting then the German Shorthaired Pointer would be the best for hunting and agility.

hunting and agility would have to be with german pincher
for policing, thats a tough one but i think the German Shepherd is in a tie with the Doberman
i have a GSD from germany and he is thrillingly agile, he can jump four feet strait up while standing and has remarkable problem solving skills, but i would bet my life he couldnt retreive a duck or kill a rat in a hole

Well, nobody mentioned Great Danes, which are actually a German breed. Bred for hunting boar, they do compete in agility, and I don't know about police work, but nobody would argue with one.

I love German Shepherds and Weimaraners. But all German dogs are good breeds. Those are just my personal favorites.
