If he doesn't do it soon, they want to put him down. He's eating and behaving fine, but he can't do it himself. His tail and one leg went floppy for a bit but now they're fine. He's 12 and apart from that very full of life. What can we do? I don't want to lose him.

I hope you have taken him to the vet for an evaluation and treatment? If he has an intestinal blockage he may need surgery, but it sounds like he has had a stroke. If his quality of life is severly effected it would be more humane to put him out of his suffering despite your own feelings.

Please do what is best for him which is part of having a pet and being a responsible owner. It sounds like you love him very much. I'll put him on the yahoo animal prayer chain for prayer. Good luck sweetie.

It may have been a pinched nerve in his back, a stroke, or spinal disease. That is just my guess by what you've said. If the dog is able to walk and hold his tail up again there is a good chance he will recover function of his urine and stools with time.

I'd want to have the vet tell me what exactly caused it and what the chances are for recovery. If your vet doesn't know exactly what caused it, I'd recommend another consult with a different vet. If it was a back injury or spinal disease they should be able to see it on x-ray. Don't give in to a vet that hasn't answered all your questions, if you aren't sure then talk with another vet.

You can help the dog go to the bathroom at home if that is all that is wrong with it right now. It isn't hard to learn and you won't have to pay the vet hospital fees while you wait to see if the dog recovers.

sounds like nerve damage. There is a nerve near the tail which connects to the bladder/bowel/tail and hind legs and when it gets stretched, it can affect all these functions, including the inability to lift the tail.

My mum's cat took 4 months to fully recover from damage to this nerve, but she had no control over her bladder for a few weeks. If she can't wee or poo, then that is more serious, and sometimes the nerve recovers, sometimes sadly it doesn't. Only time would tell and your vet could advise on this.

It sounds like some type of nerve damage. If the vet can't find out what's wrong, you need a second opinion. Consider seeing a specialist.

Maybe he has something stuck in inside his body, take him to the vet AGAIN or maybe he's trying to poo or wee but he's needs comfort, try comforting him while he does his business, maybe that'll help or maybe he has diarrhea?
