I would like to "get out of the box", meaning a cubicle. Can't take it much more. Does anyone know of a job that deals with the public that can utilize my technical skills? I don't mind taking a small pay cut but I have two kids to feed and need to find something that will pay close to what I make now. I'm lucky, in that I get to work with smart people, but the cubicle enviroment is going to make me go insane pretty soon. Any suggestions?

If you've been a civil engineering tech for 20 years, you no doubt have plenty of experience with design, layouts, etc.

You might want to consider moving into construction, and take those paperwork and cubicle technical skills into making something that's real. Taking a project management class could help you improve your budgeting, planning, and people management skills - skills that are overlooked in the cubicle world, but are mandatory for successful project completion.

Something along these lines would allow you to keep using your excellent technical knowledge, but to really put it to use. You'll be working with construction teams, talking to clients, and probably working outside, which translates into minimal time at the office!

Good luck...

Have you discussed this with the "Human Resources" folks within your present company? Most companies want to keep good people and understand that twenty years in the same job can drive anyone over the edge. You may be surprised to discover that they really want to help you.

In my case, they helped me chose a new direction, figured out which classes I needed, paid for my tuition, and transferred me to a new department -- all within a year. Because I choose this path I kept all my seniority, kept my health care, kept my pension, and even got a small raise.

have you thought about changing shifts? I used to work for an engineer that felt the same way, he end up changing to night shifts. He also made his cubicle more pleasant and made it look like the amazon. Literally!
