Some states it is the law, others it is not.
Check with your state's motor vehicle department, but as a rule, if they give you two license plates, then yes (otherwise no).

Failing to display front plates when it's required will at least get you pulled over, sooner or later. It is a minor violation that may not result in a citation the first time (or three), but it also gives the police the opportunity to thoroughly check you out, so then if there's anything else wrong, you may have inadvertently opened a Pandora's box.

In some states it is the law, in others it is not.

My Studebaker truck has no place on the front to put a license plate, so I have never put one there even though it is a requirement in the state where I live.

I've never been stopped for it though.

In Ohio we can be fined for not having our front plate. They have thought about dropping it to cut costs ( same price for plates-but only give us one ), but the law enforcement agencies keep fighting it. Indiana which is just to the west of us only has the rear plate though, been that way for years.

Depends on your state as these laws can vary greatly. In California, Illinois, and Virginia, you need two plates, but in Arizona and Tennessee, only one is required. I can only give you answers for the states I have personally lived in.
