Your local hardware dept. or craft store should carry some type of sticky type putty which is usually blue, but you can find it in white too. It will hold for an extended period of time, but it is also temporary, and when you take it off, it doesn't leave any marks or residue. I think it may be called "blue tack" or something like that.

if you have a flat cieling (not popcon)use the dry wall patch stuff that way when you get sick of the stars you can pop them off and sand the excess away without the fear of taking a clump out of the cieling out

I would use the wide scotch tape and after the star is applied, use your thumbnail to make the tape tight against the ceiling. Hope it turns out nice, it sounds lovely.

I took clear fishing line and taped it to the corner of the stars and hung them (with clear tape or tacks which ever holds) at different levels...cool effect!

go to michaels arts and crafts store, go to the adhesives (glue/tape) section, find something called doublesided tape and use that. its the best.
