The gods of the old become the devils of the new.... a long know approach to conquered nations all over the globe and at many times throughought history.
The Pagans, weren't so easily done away with. During the crusades, many of todays christain systems were developed as a "compromise" to bring the pagans in line. This is where Mary gets her "place of honor" as the Pagans were a goddess worshipping bunch, and simply would not give up a female presence in deity...so the Holy roman Church adopted Mary as "almost"...and actually do still "worship her"...going to catch some flak from this, but oh well.....
Hermes.....for the Angles....Satan is the bastardization of the Pagan Horned god......Christmas, is celebrated at Yule.....Uh cold this be why Christmas time is still called Yuletide.....I think so....
Easter is celebrated at Beltaine....(where do you think the bunnies really come from?)
Samhain, (Halloween) is considered evil (But still celebrated)
The list goes on....
Think about it....

Many Christian aspects were borrowed from other people and faiths.
A lot of the pagan religious practices were adopted in order to get people to convert to Christianity.
