How do you decide what to keep and not clutter.

Don't "throw" anything out! Donate it for a TAX DEDUCTION! If you have a large quantity of items, some organizations, Salvation Army, Purple Heart, etc., will actually send a truck to remove the stuff for you. Keep VERY good records of what you donate, just detailed descriptions. Then, come tax season next year, get Turbo Tax with "It's Deductable" and just fill in the blanks. Be honest about the condition of items, but you'll be amazed at how much a bedroom full of furniture, linens, old clothes, games, pictures, etc., can add up to. I do this every year, I ONLY give to charities and every year I have very good tax deductions added to my normal deductions.

Second, don't try to make old furniture fit the new house. If it doesn't work, donate it (or sell for cash) and get something that does work, the right size, the right color, etc. It's a new house and you deserve a new look.

Good Luck!

Have you cried yet? Because when it comes down to down-sizing, there will be lots of tears. Once you get those out of the way, it will be a lot easier to be ruthless. It's important to remember that what looks good in one home may not suit another.
One of the best ways to "de-clutter" is to hire an auctioneer. Garage sales and yard sales just don't bring in the money. Charities are great for tax write-offs. Good luck!

I just experienced this same scenario! I ended up putting load after load of items that I felt could go out in our driveway and then posted a "free" ad on Craigslist. This was awesome for two reasons. One, everything would be gone in just a few hours and two, because I didn't have to haul it away to the Goodwill myself, it didn't really feel like I was getting rid of things. It got easier and easier to sort - I would do up a box and hand it to one of the kids to put outside for me. I haven't missed ONE thing that I got rid of either. NOW my house is clutter free. It sure is easier to keep my place clean.

1. Look at the space that you will have available to you. Then while boxing up your stuff figure out where that will go in the new house. If there is no place for it throw it out.

2. If you have not touched it in a year then throw it out....chances are that you wont touch it in the next house either.

If it is a project that you were working on but have not touched in years then throw it out.

3. If it is something that you can not live without then keep it

Be ruthless. If you haven't physically and actually used it in the last year, ditch it. Ditching can be done by garbage, garage sale, donations to charity, donations to friends...
Good luck!

if you do not use it sell it. Get rid of anything no mater the value that you have not used in a year. Do not get storage it has always been a waste of money.
