It varies from state to state and whether it's a long gun (rifle or shotgun) or handgun. Most states are 18 for long guns and 21 for handguns, but some are 18 (CO, NV, AZ, & IN) or 19 (NM) for handgun. There may be more states with lower age requirements. These are ones I know.

In Pennsylvania you must be 18 to purchase a rifle, and 21 to purchase a hand gun.

WA State is 18 for rifle and pistol "to buy" legally.

although you have to be careful with pistols especially under 21, it is only legal to have a pistol on private property or a firearm recreational area if you are under 21 or do not have a concealed carry permit.

there are also strict regulations on how the pistol must be stored going to and from either area.

i got my first gun at the age of 18. but that was awhile back. i suspect 18 since you get a gun issued to you in the military.
