LUCKY DAY!
I HAPPEN TO WORK FOR A JEEP DEALERSHIP,OWN 2 JEEPS (GRAND CHEROKEE,COMMANDER) AND YES THEY DO LAST PRETTY-MUCH 4 EVER.. BUT,
YOU'RE BUYING A USED JEEP ! YOU NEVER KNOW WHO OWNED IT BEFORE YOU.. 1997 IS A "OLD" JEEP BY INDUSTRY STANDARDS NOW-A-DAYS BUT THEY ARE STILL GREAT VEHICLES..
1ST GET A CARFAX ON IT.
2ND HAVE IT CHECKED OUT BY SOMEONE WITH MECHANICAL SABBY
3RD IF IT HAS MORE THAN 140,000 MILES YOUR BOUND TO SPEND MONEY FOR REPAIRS AT SOME POINT, JUST MAKE SURE ENGINE,TRANSMISSION ARE O.K.
THIRD YOU SHOULD NOT PAY MORE THAN $2,000-2800.00 FOR IT..
BUYER BEWARE AND GOOD LUCK!

Well you didn't mention where you live, so I don't know if rust would be a problem. As with buying any used vehicle it is wise, if you are not a mechanic yourself to take it to one to look it over that has nothing to do with the dealership you are buying from. Most cars these days will last forever if you take care of them regularly. The most important thing is not how great a tune up they did to get the car ready to sell it's how well it was taken care of throughout it's life. Get a copy of the service records from a "Jeep Dealership", they keep them in their database by VIN # .... or at least get a Carfax history report if they won't give it to you.
As far as Cherokee's go they are IMOHO a very solid vehicle .... only steer away if there was a plow mounted to it or you see a lot of rust underneath.

Hope it works out for you .. good luck!

Yes you've heard right, and I'm guessing its the 4.0L inline 6 engine. If that's the case, take care of it, ie, regular maintenance, oil/filter change every 3,000 miles, transmission service every 55,000 miles and it will serve you very well. My 96 grand cherokee has 192,000+ miles on it currently and I drive it pretty much every day to and from work and it still runs, and drives great. The only 2 major items replaced was the radiator at 187,000 miles, and the starter at 189,500 miles, other than that its all original. Great offroad vehicles if your into that type of thing. If its a 2WD model don't bother, if you're going to buy a jeep get a 4WD.

My boyfriend and I just bought another Jeep Cherokee we currently have 3 and have had many others buying another one next week as a matter of fact but the one we just bought had 2544780 on it and it drives very nice had to replace a few minor things but other than that we just put 31 in. tires and a 6 inch lift and it has been so fun on the mud and on the highway so yes they last for ever if taken care of no matter how many miles.

This is a biased question. Most people who have ever owned an XJ loved it. Myself included. I've owned quite a few over the past years and every one of them went over 200K, 1 over 300K. The one I have now is a 95 with 145K on it. I can tell you that the 4.0L is one of the strongest engines I have ever seen. It is not the nost efficient by any means, but if taken care of (maintenance), it will be a good reliable motor. Keep one other thing in mind, however. Jeep is owned by DaimlerChrysler, and Chrysler has dabbled in the Jeep line, making it cheaper than the AMC models. The XJ model is one of the last remaining "true" Jeeps.

Any vehicle can last a long time, as well as it is taken care of. I know someone with a Cherokee that has well over 200,000 miles. I have also seen other Jeeps, Dodges, Fords and Chevrolets with over 300K and even beyond. Just make sure that the vehicle runs smoothly, including idling, acceleration, and cruising. If it is automatic, listen/feel carefully for how smoothly it shifts gears. If it has truly been taken care of and you continue a good maintenance schedule, it could last you a very long time.

What You need to do is get a compression test on the engine. If you have adequate cylinder pressures then that can tell alot... IF all spark plugs look like crap when you remove them that is also a bad sign... If its an automatic look at the fluid. IF its burnt i would avoid it(you put clean fluid in with detergents it will clean your tranny and most likely clog your tranny filter quick).. If it is clean try to see how often it was changed.. I think the transmission will go out before the engine will.. Also take that bad boy out on the highway,,, go about 70 MPH or faster*** and see if it drives smooth(no pulling or wandering)...without the heat going above 210,,, and then ofcourse try to see after you have taken it out idle around in town go to a drive thru.. watch that temp... If you are able to spend 45 minutes doing a test drive... you will be better off.. if it starts failing these things i would avoid it and find another... there are plenty of jeeps out there in the sea
