I think a pirate party would be cool.
Get vellum paper and reverse the print on the invitations so they have to be held up to a mirror to be read.
Have the kids to a 'treasure hunt' at the party using maps and X marks the spot (with a chest full of party favors as treasure).
You can get eye patches and pirate hats for everyone to wear.

Indoor playgrounds are great for birthday parties, it gives the kids a chance to climb, run and jump, and there is no cleanup afterwords. The type that give out coins for the kids to use for arcade games, ski ball and basketball would work well with 8 year olds. You, or another adult can play the games as well, that way you can keep an eye on things. There are package deals available that include pizza and soft drinks and juice. Most allow you to bring your own cake. Other options are a bowling party, or a movie party. Many bowling alleys and theaters have party rooms for this purpose. Whatever type of party you choose have a great day and happy birthday to your son.

Pirates! Most kids love Pirates of the Caribbean. You can hide a treasure and give them clues to find it. Give one clue which leads to a second clue, that will lead to a third one, until they finally find the treasure. It can be a gift certificate to a book store or any place that kids might like (and be good for them).
You can have a BBQ in your yard, depending on where you live. I think kids would love a Pirate BBQ party.
There could be small treasures with each clue, so everyone has a chance to find something. Then at the end, you can give little prizes to everyone. They don't have to be much.
They can even make hats and eye patches when they first arrive, so you won't even have to go buy much, just a few supplies, and maybe other parents would get involved, too!

Why don't you let him choose? At 8 years old I picked Beauty and the Beast themed party because that was a new, popular movie that all my friends and I loved. You don't want your 8 year old to have a lame clown-themed party that his friends will tease him for. He is most likely to know what is cool. I've seen Spiderman, Spongebob, Harry Potter, Tweety, all sorts of parties. Go to a party store and see what is "in" right now... might be the new Cars or Flushed Away movie...

Almost all 8 year olds have a favorite show or toy. Theme it after that. And if you dont want to do that, do something fun for everyone. I think a jungle party would be fun, for example. Ask him what he thinks would be a fun party idea.
Either way, it will be fun and exciting for your son.
