They assume it is satanic because they have not bothered to research it. They have been told by their own belief system that it is 'evil' and that overshadows all for them.

Actually, the pentacle has served turns as a symbol for many different things -- including, at one time, the five wounds of Jesus.

Some different meanings of the pentacle:

With the point up, the pentacle is used by Wiccans as a symbol which usually indicates the four elements with Spirit ascendant, enclosed wiithin the circle of eternity.

Some branches of Wicca DO use the inverted pentagram as the symbol for Second Degree initiates, but it is not Satanic in this usage either.

To the Christian thought process, anything which calls on "Magick" or calls on one to worship anything except a patriarchal supernatural being that Abraham spoke to thousands of years ago is to be considered Satanic. Pictures of Satan that were drawn in the Middle Ages resemble the Greek God, Pan. These were used by the Church to convince people that the old ways (Nature-based religions) were evil at the same time the Church was appropriating pagan holidays into their own calendar.

Standard schtuff. Demonize the opposition, translate their holidays into yours, throw in a little Inquisition and Voila! The world is yours.
