If you are awaiting a letter, the IRS needs further information or there is a problem. If you have any Federal loans in default, child support owed or any other Federal debt, it could be that part or all of your refund was offset by the Treasury Dept. 800–304–3107 is the toll-free number you can call if you suspect this may be the problem.

You will be receiving a letter with an explanation of why your refund was held up. Chances are, it has something to do with social security numbers for dependents, the earned income credit, or some other credit you took on your return that the IRS is questioning. Don't worry-the letter will be coming shortly. In the meantime, don't sweat it because there isn't much you can do about it until you know what the IRS issue is.

Yes. It is a standard way that the IRS uses to alert the taxpayer that some information may be missing from the return.

The most often problem: You forgot to sign the return.

From the time you receive the first letter, about 4 weeks until receiving the reason for the letter - to an additional 3 months after you comply with the letter, before you ever receive your refund.

I was supposed to receive my refund on 1/26, and they have been telling me about this famous cp-05 letter since 2/5.

They are reviewing your return, most likely the Earned Income Credit. You need to respond to the letter as soon as you receive it. Or a Dependant issue
If they ask for you to submit information, send it in immediately to speed up the processing of your return. Make sure to keep copies of anything you submit for your own records

Well, you could be getting audited. Or, your refund could be seized for some reason.
