You need to figure out how much money you actually contribute to the family after subtracting your work related expenses. When my husband and I did this about ten years ago we realized that I was only bringing in about $80 a month after paying for daycare, transportation, extra taxes, etc. I've been a stay-at-home mom ever since that little revelation!

I recently found an online tool to help you calculate this. I will link to it below.

That depends on your standard of living and if you will have any income to make up the difference while you are not working.......like disability pay; unemployment, spouse's income familu support, child support food stamps. You would have to calculate this for yourself. add up everything how much you spend and decide this based on your needs and income. You may not be able to take a whole yr off. I don't know. But GOD BLESS! and Congrats!

Soooo glad I live in Canada.

I have no ide what kind of standard of living you'll want to maintain while on mat leave.

Could be $10,000 is good enough. Could be you need $30,000.

add all your expenses for one month and multiply by 12. (don't forget to add money for baby expenses)

now add $10,000 to that

your total is what u should save.
