In regards to changing, should keep private areas covered with towel when possible, does it make you stand out more if you are trying to hide yourself and also make others uncomfortable, should you avert your eyes at all times, what are norms of privacy, do people talk in locker rooms? lots of questions from a very shy, overweight, large-busted and self-conscious young woman.
Thank you for taking the time to help.

Regarding what?? Rephrase your question please.

I worked as an instructor for years and would like to answer.

Addendum:

Whether going to a gym, spa, pool, women tend to undress near their locker, wrap themselves with a towel prior to going to a shower. Rewrap after showering and drying off. Go back to your locker area wrapped, get dressed. If you are really shy, turn your back to the others.

If undressing to get into your workout gear, just get changed and put on your gear.

Absolutely no need to hide under a towel while getting changed.

Initially, it may be difficult to change in front of others, but in time you will get used to it. We are all there for the same reason. People who stare are quickly noticed.

Being an instructor, I was fair game, particularly to new members. I just stared back until they returned to their own business. Or asked them what they wanted.

Once dressed whether in my gear or street clothes, I would answer questions.

PS Good idea to bring some rubber flip flops for use in shower, going and coming.

Good luck and have fun.

Proper etiquette for doing what? Changing? You treat a locker room the way you would treat a dressing room that is shared with others.
* Don't hog the mirror to apply several coats of makeup if there is only one mirror.
* Don't use the hairdryer to dry your swim suit.
* Don't use the basin to wash any of your clothes or stockings.
* Don't litter the basin surface with all manner of grooming items if it takes up all the room so nobody else can even put a tube of lipstick down.
* Don't leave wet towels on the floor if there is a specific bin for them.
* Get the things you need for a shower and take them into the shower with you.
* If there are only a few shower stalls and a lot of people that need to shower, take your shower and then walk to your locker in a towel to dress at your locker.
* NEVER apply hairspray or a spray-on deoderant in a shared locker room - there are way too many people alergic to them.
* If you make a mess, clean up after yourself immediately.
* If you spill something, wipe it up immediately.
* Look straight ahead into your locker if someone nearby is changing clothes.

As a man who has used locker room, the best bet is just to change as you would at home.

A lot of people make a bigger deal of it than it is.
