Personally, I think photo's that aren't planned are the best!
I would take him to the park, or a place he comfortable. Play frisbee & catch & run with him....See what you get!
For me, pics where the animal in comfortable & happy & where you can just snap the right picture at the right moment are the greatest!
Good Luck! =)

I take lots of pictures outside. I use treats and toys to get the dog focused. Sometimes I let the dog play with a toy so it isn't focused on me...and I can get some pictures. Play around with black and white photos too. Sometimes they make ordinary photos look really good.

My best advice would be to take your dog to do something he really enjoys. Dogs photograph best when they're having a good time and have that "happy dog" expression.
Beyond that, take lots and lots of photos and then pick the one(s) you like best. :) It's hard to capture a good photo of a dog bouncing around and having a good time, so the more you take, the more you'll have to choose from.
I have online albums with pictures of my dog. *laughs* I love photographing her and dogs in general.

Is it for serious photos, or 'silly' photos? If serious, pose the dog with props appropriate for his breed: decoys with a retriever, a cart with a Newfoundland, a Keeshound on a boat, etc. If silly, since he is an older dog, you could pose him with Geritol in a housecoat & slippers or something, LOL!

Your dog should be the inspiration.
Do some activity that will capture your dog in his happiest moments. Take him to the park, hiking, to the beach etc...
