Well, yes and no.

The PNS (peripheral nervous system) regenerates itself throughout an adult's life. This is why, for example, after severing a finger and having it surgically re-attached, feeling will eventually return.

The CNS (central nervous system) which include the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, does not regenerate over time. Scientists are still unsure why one does and another does not. They believe that perhaps it is the environment in which both types of nerves exist, but there is nothing proven as of yet.

As for myelin regeneration in the CNS, there has been some very exciting research done recently. It was reported in several major news outlets; I first saw the report on Science Daily (link below). Researchers found that prolactin, a hormone produced during pregnancy, actually causes myelin to regenerate. This coincides with the fact that pregnant women with MS experience a remission during their entire pregnancy and lactation period. Scientists had previously postulated that this was because of a modified immune response during pregnancy. We now know that it's possible to regenerate myelin in adults. Much more research is still needed, but the discoveries are extremely exciting and encouraging for those of us with MS and other demyelinating diseases.

In my uneducated information of it, the electrical powered impulse "leaks" out of the neuron the place the myelin sheath is broken. The sheath is there to contain it and if broken, can no longer try this is job exact. i'm specific there's a much greater scientific way of putting it yet that's how i've got constantly understood it. i think of I comprehend the place you're coming from with the leaping from one node to the different, yet perchance the ends of the nodes are distinctive in some thank you to permit the impulse to make that bounce.
