Yes----- you are probably screwed for a year, that's how these Gyms make their money, 50% of the people who join at the beginning of the year drop out, but have to pay till the end of their contract. Why not try and ask them if you can renege on your contract, they can only say NO!

Gyms are not very forgiving when you want to get out of a contract.
I tried to cancel a month to month when I moved 3,000 miles from the gym. They absolutely refused, though I sent them all the documentation. I ended up having American Express take care of it for me.
Since you signed a year contract, read your contract word for word and see what the loopholes are. If you can use those, do it.
Otherwise, call your bank and put a stop payment on the withdrawal. This will need to be renewed after 6 months.

Yes cancel it, you have a 7 day 'cooling off' period from the date the contract started if you wish to change your mind.

Cancel your direct debit now and tell the gym you no longer want the membership.
I don't think they will pursue you to maintain the contract if you refuse to pay. If they do write to Watchdog.

Inform them IMMEDIATELY (and ask for your money back) - chances are you have 10 days 'cooling off' period (or maybe 14 days) - DON'T delay or you will be in for a lot of aggro ...
NB. If you signed a Direct Debit, you need to inform your Bank IMMEDIATELY to cancel.
